I attended this event amongst a gathering of athletes, sports industry professionals and equality organisations. New leadership data gathered by Sporting Equals was shared highlighting stark statistics about the lack of ethnic diversity on sports governing boards. The main findings:
• Out of 68 organisations only 1 has a BAME CEO
• 61 organisations (90%) have no BAME senior leaders at all
• 50 (74%) have no BAME Board members at all
This is a very grim picture and is a call for the UK sport governing bodies to do more to tackle this woeful lack of representation. Activists and those working in sport committed to equality are very disappointed with these statistics further compounded by the release of the Sports Governance Code which included gender targets for sports boards but none for disabled, LGBT or BAME groups.
